It's not just the pause tho - it's Ralphie's facial expression - especially his eyes. His character realizes something during the pause - the audience gets it and laughs - then Ralphie delivers the punchline, and the audience laughs again.

I've def beefed up my pausing after watching this and it's been to fun to play with that tension.
Right on. I have too and def do the left/right/middle thing a bunch as well. Fun stuff to mess around with for sure.
