What's it like doing standup at the Beacon Theater?
A 2,894 seat venue that somehow still feels intimate.
In NYC? Come check out Misguided Meditation with Matt Ruby on Friday, Feb. 9 at Popped in the LES. Promo code PLANTS gets ya a nice discount.
Got to perform at the Beacon Theater recently (opening up for Mark Normand). Here’s a video of what that was like, some photos, and the caption I wrote at IG about it all…
Helluva night! Even broke out the bolo tie for this one. @marknormand sold out the Beacon Theater and I had a blast doing a set before him (along with @jdfisch and @philmhanley too). Cool photos here from master photog @salacuse.
Seen Leonard Cohen and Tom Petty on that stage (two of my all-time faves) so was nice to ride that wave. 2,894 seats yet somehow still felt intimate. Everyone crushed too. Comedy is a wild ride.
Go see Mark on the road (his new hour is killer and he'll even tell ya what happened with all that TMZ meshugas). Or come to one of the weekly shows we do together in NYC (Hot Soup at Comedy Cellar on Tuesdays and Good Eggs at NY Comedy Club on Wednesdays).
FYI Mark and I still do what we did years ago: Sit down at a coffee shop, pull out notes, run bit ideas past each other, and say, "Is this anything?" Crazy where that can take ya.
And fyi, doing my Misguided Meditation show (Comedy! Visuals! Sounds!) on Feb. 9 at @popped.nyc in the LES. Info at link in bio or go to mattrubycomedy.com/shows. And bunch of road dates upcoming too (Colorado, Texas, Maryland, Connecticut, etc.). My weekly Rubesletter is best bet for staying up to date on all that.
Big rooms and little rooms. It all reminds me of a White Stripes song:
🎶 Well, you're in your little room
And you're working on something good
But if it's really good
You're gonna need a bigger room
And when you're in the bigger room
You might not know what to do
You might have to think of how you got started
Sitting in your little room 🎶
