Chris Rock:

I’d always end up broken down on the highway. When I stood there trying to flag someone down, nobody stopped. But when I pushed my own car, other drivers would get out and push with me. If you want help, help yourself – people like to see that.

Everyone’s always trying to find a hack or get “discovered” or hoping for some lightning strike that elevates their career. The best hack though is to start doing it. Make the thing.

Need more stage time? Start producing your own show. “I need to hang at that club and put in face time.” Nah, you need to get up more and start killing. That’s what bookers respect. “I need an agent.” Figure out how to sell tickets first. Then you’ll have leverage instead of begging for scraps.
