Amy Hawthorne keeps posting great stuff for comics at her newsletter. The latest: Cool It with the Crowdwork Clips! In it, she discusses whether or not to worry about burning material by releasing it on social media (as opposed to waiting to put it on a special/album). Her p.o.v.: “There’s no such thing as Burning Material!!!!”
I think this all got started, really, because of the decades old fear of “burning” material. Guess what? That’s Not A Thing Anymore.
YouTube specials get repackaged by networks (or stand on their own), Michael Cox is not going to comb through your feed to see if you’ve posted a version of a joke in your late night set as a Reel 9 months ago.
Also, online is a medium. You’ll probably get more viewers on your own channels than you would with a Netflix or network set. So, why are you “saving” it?
That's why I like Matteo Lanes The Advice Special. He seems to revel in his material, old or new, whatever it is... Funny gay, funny guy...
