Fun is contagious
Audiences can smell fear. But on the flip side, they can also smell fun, playfulness, and amusement. If you’re genuinely enjoying yourself onstage, they’ll start to mirror that.
Sinbad’s secret to success: He’s always having fun.
If you’re having fun on stage, the audience will have fun watching you. Any clip you see of Sinbad doing stand-up, movies, interviews, etc. he is always smiling and having fun. This energy is contagious and is a next level technique all young comics should develop. For your next show, set the intention to have fun.
The audience will feed off your enjoyment, according to Ted Gioia.
Don’t tell me that it’s impossible to have fun in such a stressful situation. Every last one of us wants to be heard and acknowledged, and you will never find any situation that delivers those goods in more abundance than public speaking. It’s almost as exciting as playing music on stage—in fact, the adrenaline rush feels almost the same in both instances. So just as you are about to begin your talk, tell yourself: I’m a Rock Star and I Totally Rock! And it’s not a lie—for the next few minutes, that will exactly be what you will experience.
